The action, receiver, fire control group, safety catch and slide release catch of the Remington Model shotgun are similar to those used on the Remington Model series pump-action centerfire rifles and carbines. The basic fire control group design was first used in the automatic 11— Several parts of the will interchange with the semi-automatic Remington and 11— The original models were offered with fixed chokes.

In Remington introduced the new Remington "Rem Choke" system of screw-in chokes also fitted to Remington model auto-loading shotguns at the same time.

Initially, the Rem Chokes were offered only in 12 gauge in barrel lengths of 21", 26", and 28". The following year the availability was expanded to the 20 gauge and included other barrel lengths. Production s for over 30 years had a design whereby a user could fail to press a shell all the way into the magazine when loading such that the shell latch did not engage the shell, and such actions could tie up the gun.

The potential issue was resolved with the introduction of the "Flexi Tab" carrier. Guns with this modification can be identified by the "U"-shaped cut-out on the carrier, visible from below the gun. The cut-out, combined with a modified machining on the underside of the slide assembly, allows the action to be opened with a shell on the carrier. There are hundreds of variations of the Remington in 12, 16, 20, 28 gauges and.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. If you're a novice gun owner with a Remingtonthen you may not realize how many Remington accessories and upgrades are all available for your shotgun.

You need to take benefit of those upgrades rather than sticking with the factory version of your shotgun because they might help make the shooting experience more pleasant and increase your precision at the same time. One significant upgrade you could make it with a strategic follower. When you look at the magazine follower who comes along with the factory model shotgun, you'll see it's made and breaks quite easily.

This is why owners of the Remington keep complaining about feeding issues with their gun. From the early models of theit'd metal followers that didn't break because they had been stable and reliable.

However, the more recent models use cheaper components to reduce the prices. Thus you must replace the factory made follower with stainless steel follower to ensure you've reliable feeding. An upgrade you likely would not have thought of is currently restoring the security button on the Remington The factory safety which comes along with the shotgun is rather modest, and owners complain it's difficult to disengage it quickly under stressful circumstances.

By substituting this small security button with an oversized security button, you'll be capable to rapidly disengage the security and shoot a shotgun whenever you need to in a stressful situation. On the other hand, you'll also be in a position to make sure the security is switched on when you're in cases in which you do not wish to fire the weapon. This is very important to consider, particularly if you're a beginner. Last, the very popular Remington Accessories upgrade is currently substituting the fore end and inventory with newer ones.

The Remington is known for its versatility and reliability, as it gives you an edge in any goal you and your trusty Remmy are trying to accomplish.

In this article, we'll be taking a look at some of the best ammo available. Comparison Chart of the Remington Ammo. The first step when shopping for shotgun ammo is to find the right gauge or firearm caliber. Unlike other firearms that use caliber as a dimension, shotguns do not use the linear measurement, but the diameter of their bore is expressed as a gauge, which, in fact, is a weight. Shotguns come in differently-sized gauges, where, for instance, the most widespread is gauge.

Although it actually refers to the 12 solid spherical balls made out of one pound of lead and with the same diameter as the inside of the barrel. A gauge is also one of the most popular, which means that 20 lead balls can be made from one pound of lead. The Model is available in 12, 16, 20, or gauge and in. It should be said that the way you measure the length of a shell is by measuring the length of the spent hull empty shotgun case and that means that a Modellike any shotgun, can shoot shells shorter than its chamber but not longer.

Though the larger shell can physically fit within the gun, it can be hazardous to fire a larger shell, since the weapon may not be able to handle the higher pressures, which can result in damage to the firearm or, more importantly, to you or bystanders. Furthermore, shotgun shells are available in either high-brass or low-brass iterations.

While in the early days, high-base AKA high-brass meant better protection of the paper shell. The distinct thing about shotguns is that they sport a choke, a section at the end of the barrel, placed in the bore that slightly constricts the diameter of the muzzle. Choke Diagram. Classic break-barrel shotguns usually have fixed choke barrels, but modern day shotguns use the interchangeable, screw-in choke tubes.

Some shotgun barrels are rifled for newer sabot slugs, metallic projectiles that, when supported by a plastic sabot, give the shooter rifle-like accuracy beyond yards.

According to unwritten rules, shotshells with small shot birdshot 9 up to, say 4 are the best for small animals or clay targets. Believe it or not, there are advocates of birdshot in home defense scenarios, since the confined space of a house or apartment can be very lethal against soft targets. For larger animals and self-defense, it's better to use buckshot, shotshells with somewhat larger BBs than birdshot.

They range from BB size. Buckshot Pellets. Besides smaller sizes of buckshot and birdshot, there are also slugs - the largest round available in a shotgun shell. The slug is a single, big piece of metal usually around one ounce intended for large animals at ranges inside yards. Shotguns do possess certain limitations, as with any weapon, but when using the proper ammunition, you can make the maximum use of the gun.

Depending on your plans to use a shotgun, either for bird hunting, home defense or everything else in-between, you'll need to choose from different loads. Moreover, one of the recommended ways of finding the best ammo for Remington is to read a shotgun ammo buyer's guide, like this one, which will lead you in the right direction. What Recent Buyers Report These shells were a hit among the new users who were small and large game hunters. Among the targets of choice were varmint, waterfowl, and whitetail deer, to name a few.

They managed to shoot some pretty precise kill shots, thanks to the tight shooting groups. The Remington Express and Remington Wingmaster are two weapons with a lot in common. Their performances are much pretty equal to each other. The only real difference between the two shotguns is their cosmetic look and some of the internal parts. The Remington Express contains synthetic fore-ends and stocks made of laminated wood.

The metal surfaces of the shotgun have a matte finish that is not polished. As for the Remington Wingmaster, its stock and fore-end are made out of walnut and its metal surfaces have a polished blue finish to them. Not only does this make the shotgun look more attractive, but it also means it has higher quality materials that are more durable as well.

The action is smoother. As for the internal parts, they are almost all the same and have the same mechanical specifications. Wingmaster uses more reliable non-MIM extractor. The only other difference you will find is in the price of each weapon because of their cosmetic differences. The Remington Wingmaster will obviously be more expensive since it is made with walnut and polished metal surfaces.

But if you are someone who cherishes their shotgun and wants classic look and the highest quality materials on the outside, then go ahead and purchase the Wingmaster. It may shoot the same but it will be something better to look at when you hang it on the wall or go out hunting with your buddies.

Just make sure you take care of your Wingmaster by keeping up the polishing of the metal surfaces and periodically oiling the walnut of the stock and fore-end. If you do that then the shotgun should be able to last you for many years to come. The main difference between the express and the wingmaster is the working parts.

All the working parts in the wingmaster are machined, while all the working parts in the express are stamped. The wingmaster has a much smoother action than the express because of this. Less hand labor goes into making the express since all the working parts are stamped, which is the main reason for the higher price tag of a wingmaster.

Not only are the Express parts stamped, but the trigger assembly is plastic, compared to the machines steel of the Wingmaster!

Wilson Combat Border Patrol Remington 870

Big difference!!! Pretty sure thats not accurate. I know both receivers are milled. Orher than the extractior being cast instead of milled, and perhaps more polishing on the Wingmaster, my understanding is that funtionally and in the fabricating of parts they are the same. This is completely untrue. The extractor is mim stamped but the other internals are the same.

The trigger housing is metal vs. Plastic, and theres a bit less polishing done overall. Add to that the different exterior finish and you have wingmaster vs. Its dangerous to give out bad info. Not so, the internal parts are pretty much the same, only the exterior parts are less refined. Performance is the same. The express has a few cheaper parts, but unlikely to break. Hardwood and walnut are equally durable.

The metal of both will rust if neglected. The wing master imo has a short fast pump stroke, perfect for shooting from the hip or shoulder. What about the barrel rifling? There are numerous variants of our favorite Remingtonand it is a little difficult to choose one for a beginner. I receive lots of questions about different versions of the and which one to choose. So, this article is based on my 10 years of experience owning the Remington and writing articles about it.

I had an opportunity to test almost every modification of the shotgun, and now, I want to share the details and differences between them with you.

There are many variants of the Remington shotgun. This article was written to help you to choose the best one which suits your needs the most. All Remington shotguns are based on one platform. Whether you buy the budget Express or the more expensive Police, they all use the same platform. You can buy and upgrade those parts yourself if you want.

One of the biggest advantages of the is its steel receiver. It is made from a solid block of steel, which is what makes the Remington so strong and reliable. This is the only shotgun in the world that is made of steel. I have put over 40, rounds into two s, and they still work perfectly. I only had small problems, such as a broken firing pin spring.

Another advantage of the most popular pump-action shotgun in the world are all the aftermarket accessories and upgrades available for it. They are available from many manufacturers, and each year, we see new ones being introduced to the market.

All Remington versions are built on one platform and receiver made of a solid block of steel. This is the heart of the platform. But still, there are many small differences you need to know about.

Some of them are just cosmetic, but some of them are more important. There is the Tactical version with a one-piece magazine tube.

This eliminates the joint between the magazine and magazine tube extension. This was done to add more reliability to the shotgun. The joint is a weak point where the spring or follower may get stuck. This is especially true with a standard magazine follower.

Aftermarket magazine followers are more reliable than the factory ones. That is why the barrel nut on some of the Tactical versions are in a different location, so you will need a spacer F for the Remington Tactical shotgun one-piece magazine tube if you want to install the barrel from one of the common versions. Some of the more expensive versions have magazine cap detent. It prevents magazine cap or magazine extension from loosening. A magazine cap detent is available on Tactical and Police versions of the Remington It is more reliable to have magazine cap detent, especially if you shoot a lot.

It is even possible to add a magazine cap detent to your yourself. Basic Remington shotguns, which come without the magazine tube, usually have two dimples at the end of the magazine tube. They are needed to hold the new style spring retainer in place.

But they also prevent the owner from installing the magazine tube. You will need to remove the dimples before installing the magazine tube extension. Most of the versions come with a Metal Injection Molded extractor. This is the modern process of parts manufacturing, and it is suitable for many purposes.Designed in and still in full-throttle production, the pump-action gauge has nary a chink in its armor. It never complains. It competently accomplishes any task demanded, short of Afghanistan-range sniper shots.

It just plain dominates. And one gets the feeling the venerable smoothbore is only just beginning to stretch its legs. Carving its niche through near boredom-level performance, the Remington has earned its spot in the pantheon of great American guns from its dependability. Well, sort of.

Originally conceived as a field gun, the has far exceeded its original job description of tea kettling quail and mallards awing. The shotgun has eternally shed its skin to become something anew — riot gun, SWAT tool, home-defense howitzer, and military implement. Nevertheless, the Remington as a tactical tool is perhaps among its most popular guises presently.

Of the 30 variations presently in production, a full quarter of the s could be considered tactical in nature. But what does that mean in particular?

Tactical, like beauty, is somewhat in the eye of the beholder. However, we can narrow it down to a few basic traits most look for when the shop for a tactical shotgun :.

Certainly, you could tack on some extras such as sling system or enhanced sights, maybe a rail. Handy as those features are, a tactical shotgun they do not make. So, with a loose definition in hand, here are the top four Remington tactical options available today. They hit nearly every price point and cover nearly every application.

As plain and simple as it gets when it comes to Remington tactical shotguns, the Home Defense is a knock-out bargain. There are cheaper s available, but none set up to excel like this one.

In particular, its 6-round tubular magazine — two more than standard models — gives you more than enough firepower to handle anything outside a Hunnish siege.
